America
Prelude to Old Glory
America was an exhibiton held in Falmouth University’s communication design building atrium, exploring how the broad contexts in which the U.S. flag has been used affects its meaning.
Various artefacts, photographic material, and texts are arranged in a scattered composition, with no clear start or end point. The intention of this was to disrupt the sequence of how materials are viewed and interacted with, instead inviting people to explore, debate, and compare materials themselves.
America acted as a pre-cursor to what became Old Glory.

America
Further Information
"America" is a research project and exhibition that explores the contradictory meanings of the U.S. flag in different contexts. Inspired by the chaos of U.S. politics during the pandemic—particularly the Black Lives Matter protests, the U.S. Election, and the January 6th riots—the project examines how the flag is used to represent both hope and despair.
The exhibition, inspired by Wolfgang Tillmans' Truth Study Center, used a scattered, unordered composition of images, academic texts, personal writings, and artefacts to invite viewers to debate and question the flag's symbolism.
I wanted to minimise the potential bias of being a curator by allowing people to explore the ideas in a non-linear form, something not quite possible with a publication or poster series.
America was a precursor to Old Glory, which expanded on these ideas further.
